Abstract

Animation as an art form only lately began to be theorized in academia. For this reason, attempts to crystallize a definition of this practice have followed one another at the same speed as technological innovations and new aesthetic paths have emerged. The most recent proposals for reflection on animation seek to view it not as an object but as a process.I propose that beyond the features or elements usually associated with animation, we  consider this art form as being essentially performative and intermedial. It is from this perspective that I analyze the work of director Joanna Quinn and different ways in which her films explore the performative possibilities of the visual arts, namely drawing, fusing them with narrative codes from other artistic traditions.

Author Biography

  • Luís Vintém, Instituto Politécnico de Portalegre

    Nasceu em Benguela, Angola, em 1972. É licenciado em Ciências da Comunicação pela  Universidade Nova de Lisboa - FCSH e Especialista em Design, Animação e Multimédia pelo Instituto Politécnico de Portalegre, onde é Professor Adjunto, integrado no Departamento de Artes, Design e Animação. Frequenta atualmente o Doutoramento em Artes Performativas e da Imagem em Movimento, da Universidade de Lisboa e IPL Lisboa.

    É coordenador do CTeSP Design Multimédia e Audiovisuais e sub-coordenador da licenciatura em Design de Animação; responsável pelo projecto Curtas Metragens de Animação, financiado pelo ICA através do programa de apoio à criação de públicos nas escolas e co-autor e argumentista das curtas-metragens de animação Iris (2024) e Vagabundo (em fase de produção).
