Hate speech has become an increasingly present phenomenon in contemporary Portuguese society, displaying itself in a particularly intense way within the journalistic context. The book Discurso de ódio, jornalismo e participação das audiências: Enquadramento, regulação e boas práticas embodies the purpose of deepening the study of challenges faced by journalism in Portugal, with special emphasis on hate speech in participatory spaces managed by media journalism organisations. It also aims at answering a central question: what differentiates freedom of expression from abuse? This work consists in a book’s review, which offers an in-depth reflection about media’s ethical and social responsibilities on promoting a more civilised and inclusive digital public space.
