Covering practically the entire 20th century, the book Um outro jornalismo é possível: media alternativos em Portugal (Another kind of journalism is possible: alternative media in Portugal) brings together texts that tell an alternative history of the Portuguese media from the First Republic to the 1980s. It covers the struggles between anarchists and communists, resistance to the Estado Novo, daily censorship in newsrooms, the clandestine publication and circulation of the communist and student press, but also the conquest of freedom of expression and information, the women’s press and the underground fanzines of the 1980s and 1990s. As if that were not enough, the book also brings together testimonies from editors of different media (print and online) on what the alternative media of the second decade of the 21st century might look like. This is a book that looks both backwards and forwards.
