The news podcasts in undergraduates’ daily life

Abstract

This article seeks to shed light on news podcasts, a medium considered strategic for media companies to attract young people without news consuming habits. A survey was carried out through Google Forms aiming at young undergraduate students from the University of Brasília (UnB), Brazil. This audience is within the profile of podcast consumers identified by national surveys (ABPOD, 2019; IBOPE, 2019). The purpose was to understand the uses that young people make of news podcasts and the meanings with which they are inserted in the social life of undergraduate students. The research concludes that news podcasts have already penetrated the daily life of young people, contributing to the construction of information consumption habits, maintenance of social relations and understanding of events in Brazil and in the world.

Author Biographies

  • Cleisyane Lopes Quintino, University of Brasília (UnB)

    Master’s student in Communication at the University of Brasília (UnB). She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism from the Federal University of Ceará (2011) and works as a technical-administrative staff member at the University of Brasília. She has experience in print, audiovisual, and radio journalism production. Her research interests focus on podcasts, combining quantitative and qualitative approaches.

  • Nelia R. Del Bianco, University of Brasília (UnB)

    PhD in Communication from the University of São Paulo, with a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Seville. Professor in the graduate programs in Communication at the University of Brasília and the Federal University of Goiás. Visiting professor in the graduate program at the Federal University of Ouro Preto. Her research focuses on the audiovisual communication ecosystem, with emphasis on technological transformations in broadcasting and journalism, public broadcasting, audiovisual and telecommunications infrastructure, communication policies, public communication, and misinformation in public health.

  • Dione Oliveira Moura, University of Brasília (UnB)

    PhD in Information Sciences from the University of Brasília (UnB). She has served as Editorial Director and President of the Brazilian Association of Journalism Researchers (SBPJor), and is currently the Midwest Director of the Association of Journalism Professors (ABEJ). In studies on media consumption, she acted as Regional Coordinator for the Federal District in the research network Brazil Connected – Youth and Media Consumption in Times of Convergence, nationally coordinated by Nilda Jacks, UFRGS. She is currently a faculty member in both the Undergraduate and Graduate Programs at the Faculty of Communication, UnB, and holds administrative leadership roles within the same faculty.
