Portraits of the Pietà
reflections on the discourses and identities in contemporary photography

Photos are representations that engender speeches laden with meanings, crossed by intertextuality, interdiscoursiveness and intericonicity. It's been centuries since the Catholic Church has lost its hegemonic influence on the planet; however, throughout the Western world, the christian iconography is still very present and continues to contribute to the formation of people's identity. The purpose of this communication is to discuss the influence of the Pietà’s intericonicity in works of contemporary photographers, trying to understand, through analysis, the way they build the image of the mother of Christ, which senses these discourses generate and how this image can have impact on women's identities, specially with regard to motherhood.
