This article explores the evolution of the mockumentary genre, starting with a historical analysis focused on works and pieces of media that have marked and shaped the genre, leading to the formation of its own discourse. At a time when comedy is often used as an escape from reality, it is intriguing to note how it increasingly draws from reality to articulate humor and communicate effectively with the audience. The mockumentary gradually asserts itself as an ubiquitous format in the media landscape, and its range of variants expands, broadening what we can encompass under the term. On television, mockumentary comedy has become the dominant form, and on the internet, web mockumentaries have expanded the scope of narratives and audience involvement. Currently, digital satire, based on emerging digital technologies, with the use of artificial intelligence, of which we highlight deepfake, and the growing atomization of social media content, presents itself as the new field of expansion of tension between reality and representation of reality that has always characterized mockumentary.
