Abstract

Resulting from a research project on the propagandistic uses of photography in books, catalogues, albums and magazines of the period 1934-1974, the book Photography and Propaganda in Portugal during the Estado Novo, organised by Filomena Serra, was recently published. With a careful design and texts in English Portuguese, this edition is a very important contribution and systematisation for a better understanding of the Portuguese history of photography and the visual public space it constituted, in the particular case of public persuasion, whose methods must be studied today, given the almost omnipresent role of photography in the new virtual public spaces, crossed by challenging forms of propaganda.
