Photography, self-portrait and autobiography

This paper tries to understand the predominance of self representation and autobiographical practices in contemporary photography. It draws questions about the history of photography, particularly of self portraiture, in order to make clearer the present discussions of photography’s identity. Addressing the question of subjectivity and authorship, we present a brief sketch of the main arguments about the medium’s identity, from «an impartial vista» to the constitution of «an author’s view», up to contemporary rethinking of its indexical and automatic state.
