Abstract

The growth of Internet and social networks’ users has forced many healthcare institutions to use these channels of communication to reach out to patients. In Portugal, it is the responsibility of the Public Health Units (USP), functional units of the Healthcare Centre Groups, to manage intervention programmes within the scope of prevention, promotion and protection of the population's health. This work aimed to identify and analyse the online presence of USP in mainland Portugal, namely the use of websites and social networks, such as Facebook, to fulfil their responsibilities. Among the 55 Public Health Units analysed, only in 15 (27.3%) specific websites were identified, and in only three (5,4%) was there a presence on Facebook.
