Abstract

Expressions such as “healthy thanks to communication” (Belim & Vaz de Almeida, 2018a), “opening the door of communication for better health outcomes” (Vaz de Almeida & Belim, 2019), communication “as a light on the patient’s path” (Vaz de Almeida & Belim, 2020), and “communication skills as the key” to optimizing health literacy (Belim & Vaz de Almeida, 2018b) reflect the value of communication in healthcare.

Author Biographies

  • Célia Belim, University of Lisbon, CAPP, Institute of Social and Political Sciences, University of Lisbon (ISCSP-ULisboa)

    Assistant Professor in Communication Sciences (CC) at the Institute of Social and Political Sciences, University of Lisbon (ISCSP-ULisboa), teaching since 2000. She holds a PhD in Communication Sciences, a Master’s degree in Political Science, and postgraduate qualifications in Political Science and Islamic Studies. Currently, she serves as Executive Coordinator of the first cycle of CC. She coordinates the project Communicating Health, associated with the Centre for Public Administration and Policies (CAPP). She has supervised research across all three cycles of higher education on communication in the health context, participated in conferences, and published extensively on health communication. She has received four academic awards, three of them for research.

  • Cristina Vaz de Almeida, CAPP-ISCSP – University of Lisbon; ISPA

    Director of the Graduate Program in Health Literacy at the Instituto Superior de Psicologia Aplicada (ISPA). She holds a PhD in Communication Sciences, a Master’s degree in New Technologies Applied to Education from the Autonomous University of Barcelona and Universidad Carlos III, Madrid, and postgraduate degrees in Marketing (ISG), Positive Psychology (ISCSP, 2016), and Environmental Law (Portuguese Catholic University, 1991). She is a frequent speaker at national and international events on health literacy and the author and coordinator of several books, including Health Literacy in Practice: Models, Strategies, Interventions (2019) and 50 Health Literacy Techniques in Practice. A Guide for Health (Vols. I & II, 2020), as well as numerous scientific articles.
