Abstract

The attack on the newspaper Charlie Hebdo, occurred in January 7, 2015, raised a significant debate on fundamentalism and the boundaries of freedom of expression. However there's nothing new about the Charlie Hebdo be protagonist in polemics, before this episode the paper had already been involved in other discussion involving the Islamic religion and the publication of cartoons of Muhammad. In this sense, the aim of this work is to determine if the interest of the French by this newspaper is connected with controversies involving Religion, Islam and the Prophet Muhammad. The hypothesis of the research is that the paper uses of polemics to increase public interest among French Web surfers by the newspaper. We use Google Trends to plot series of temporal interests of netizens by the newspaper Charlie Hebdo, for Islam, Prophet Muhammad and Religion. When generating predictions and compare the frequencies identified that: 1) the highest peaks of interest by the newspaper Charlie Hebdo occurred at times when the newspaper became involved in polemics; 2) variables Religion, Islam and Muhammad are correlated to the temporal interest for Charlie Hebdo.
