Abstract

Background - Low attendance to Cardiac Rehabilitation programs is a current problem. Although there are several studies on the factors influencing the patients’ attendance to these programs, the professionals’ views on this subject are not known. Objectives - To identify factors of non-adherence to the exercise component of Cardiac Rehabilitation programs, according to physiotherapists. To verify if their opinion depends on their personal characteristics, professional experience, and phase of the intervention, or if it is related to their perception of patients’ adherence or to their adherence concept. Methodology - This was a transversal study involving 20 physiotherapists working in Cardiac Rehabilitation, to whom a questionnaire was applied. Results - As far as the factors influencing patients’ adherence to exercise are concerned, there was a major consensus among physiotherapists in relation to the professionals’ related aspects, pathology-related aspects, and social aspects. The results that approached a  statistically significant correlation refer to the following items: “Social aspects” and “Adherence level perception” (moderately negative correlation); and “Professional related aspects” and “Adherence concept” (moderate correlation). Conclusion - This study permitted the identification of the non-adherence factors to exercise components of Cardiac Rehabilitation programs, according to the sample. However, it was not possible to verify if the physiotherapist’s opinion, about nonadherence factors, depends on their characteristics.
