Abstract

Introduction – The technological development allowed early detection of cancer and therefore a more efficient and effective therapeutic approach, resulting in increased survival of patients. Thus it is intended to evaluate the influence of radiotherapy on the quality of life of patients with breast cancer. Methodology – Forty-seven participants who performed radiotherapy in Centro Hospitalar Barreiro-Montijo filled out two questionnaires, EORTC QLQ-C30 and QLQ-BR23, before initiating radiotherapy and on the last day of treatment. The results were analyzed using the software SPSS version 19.0. Results – It was observed a slight decrease in the quality of global health on the second assessment. Functional and symptomatic scales it was observed a decrease in the second assessment. In the symptomatic scale regarding the questionnaire QLQ-BR23, it was observed a decrease in the side effects resulting from radiotherapy, at the last moment of assessment. Discussion of Results – The results from the questionnaire QLQ-C30 reveal that the overall assessment of patients is not influenced by radiotherapy. Regarding the questionnaire QLQ-BR23, the symptoms related to the breast and arm had a slightly significant increase in the second assessment, these being associated with radiotherapy. According to the obtained results, radiotherapy does not influence the quality of life in patients with breast cancer.
